Laugh ‘till you Cannot Weep was inspired by a poem my grandfather, Arthur Sweet (August 19, 1909 - January 12, 1981) wrote in 1935. Written during the Dust Bowl and the depression in Oklahoma, the poem is filled with both heartache and transcendence. I have often thought of this poem when life gets difficult and current events seem insurmountable.
My dear, you must laugh at life,
Let your smile be gay;
Sorrow, like thrust of a knife,
Can tear the heart away.
Let not your sadness give birth
To tears that shatter pride;
Call out your laughter and mirth
To guard the wound you hide.
When strains of sad music awake
Hurt that is buried deep,
Though you feel your heart must break,
Laugh ‘till you cannot weep.
