BIOGRAPHY

After receiving cochlear implants in 2015, I began listening to audiobooks as part of my therapy. By chance one of the first books I listened to was Naomi Klein’s book This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate. This book became the catalyst for a series of art-works about societal change and how we can cope with the dramatic, systemic problem of climate change. Our newly generated ability to communicate rapidly on a massive scale has transformed society’s capability to rapidly alter our behaviors and attitudes. This fundamental shift gives me great hope where hope might otherwise be hard to find.

During my high school Junior summer I attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Designs summer school. I then went on to receive my BFA from Kansas City Art Institute in Kansas City, Missouri in 1983 where I studied Painting. One semester was spent at the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore's mobility program. I later attended Parsons School of Design’s MFA Painting program in New York City from 1983 to 1984.

In New York City I began working in publishing and eventually worked as the Production Manager for Artforum Magazine, and then later worked as a graphic designer at MacWorld Magazine in San Francisco. I have also taught art to both children and adults, for a number of years working at a local arts center and through the public school district’s enrichment program. More recently I have served on local arts boards, San Mateo City Arts and The Peninsula Museum, helping to promote the arts in my area. Now, my efforts are focused in the studio on my artwork and working with climate organizations such as The Climate Reality Project, Citizens Climate Lobby, and San Mateo Climate Action Team.

At its best, our shared culture helps us to thrive and live in harmony with one another and the planet we live on, consequently nurturing a healthy culture has become one of my over-arching goals. Our individual visions and decisions shape that culture for better or worse and I hope and trust that my artwork will help in some small way contribute towards im-proving the world.
